Repair Hair Transplant

A bad hair transplant is one of the most demoralising outcomes a patient can experience. You went through a procedure, spent money, waited months and what you got back wasn't what you were promised. Unnatural hairlines, wrong growth direction, patchy density, visible scarring. It happens more often than clinics like to admit. The good news is that most of it can be fixed. A repair hair transplant corrects the results of a previously failed or poorly executed procedure. It's more complex than the original surgery; it requires a surgeon who can look at someone else's work, understand what went wrong, and rebuild it properly. That takes a different level of skill. At DMC Trichology, each repair case is evaluated in full before anything is planned. Hairline redesign, donor area assessment, scar tissue analysis every factor is mapped out first. The goal is to deliver the natural, dense result the patient should have had the first time. Two locations in Delhi Vasant Vihar (South Delhi) and Rajouri Garden (West Delhi).

Ideal Candidates

  • Unnatural, asymmetric, or poorly designed hairlines
  • Grafts growing in the wrong direction due to incorrect implantation angle
  • Thin or patchy density from poor follicle survival in the prior surgery
  • Bumps, boils, or surface irregularities at the recipient site
  • Over-harvested or scarred donor areas from the previous procedure
  • Supplementation with body hair (beard, chest, arms, legs) when scalp donor supply is limited
  • The confidence that was lost after a disappointing result
Ideal Candidates

Ideal Candidates

  • An unnatural or asymmetric hairline from a previous transplant
  • Low density or poor graft survival after a prior procedure
  • Grafts visibly growing in the wrong direction
  • A pluggy appearance, visible scarring, or surface irregularities from older techniques
  • Surgery done at under-equipped or inexperienced clinics
  • An incomplete prior transplant that needs additional grafts to finish the job

How the Repair Process Works

Comprehensive Evaluation

Comprehensive Evaluation

the underlying cause of failure is identified, residual donor supply is assessed, and recipient site irregularities are mapped

Donor Assessment

Donor Assessment

scalp donor viability is determined; body hair supplementation is planned if scalp supply is insufficient

Hairline Redesign

Hairline Redesign

a natural, symmetric hairline is designed from scratch, appropriate to the patient's facial structure and age

Graft Re-harvesting

Graft Re-harvesting

grafts are extracted carefully, without putting further stress on an already compromised donor area

Recipient Site Preparations

Recipient Site Preparations

scarred tissue is treated, and misaligned grafts are removed or repositioned before new ones go in

Implantation

Implantation

new grafts are placed at the correct angle, density, and spacing for natural-looking growth

Recovery & Monitoring

Recovery & Monitoring

healing of scarred tissue and graft survival are tracked through follow-up appointments

The Approach at DMC Trichology

The Approach at DMC Trichology

Most failed transplants share one common flaw: no proper preoperative evaluation. Grafts were placed without understanding the patient's hair characteristics, donor supply, or scalp condition. The result was always going to be unpredictable.

Repair cases at DMC Trichology start with exactly what the original procedure skipped a full integrative preoperative assessment. Where scalp donor supply has been over-harvested, body hair transplantation fills the gap. Advanced trichoscopy is used to identify viable grafts even within damaged or scarred tissue before any extraction begins.

Before Treatment

  • If you've had a previous transplant elsewhere, bring any records, photos, or documentation you have from that procedure. The more your doctor knows about what was done before, the better the plan for correction.
  • Stop blood thinners, aspirin, or anti-inflammatory medication at least a week before. Your doctor will confirm exactly what needs to be paused at your consultation.
  • Avoid alcohol for 3–5 days before the procedure. Repair transplants can involve more complex extraction and clean blood flow matters more here than in a first-time procedure.
  • Stop smoking at least a week prior scar tissue from a previous transplant already affects circulation in the area and smoking compounds that.
  • Wash your hair the morning of the procedure and come in with nothing in it. No product, no dry shampoo, nothing applied to either the donor or recipient area.
  • Eat a proper meal before arriving. Repair sessions can run longer than standard transplants depending on the extent of correction needed.

After Treatment

  • Keep your hands away from the recipient area for the first 72 hours. This is non-negotiable for any transplant but especially for repair cases where the tissue has already been through a procedure before.
  • Some increased redness or sensitivity around previously scarred or plugged areas is normal; the skin in repair cases has a different healing baseline than untreated scalp.
  • Sleep with your head slightly elevated for the first few nights to manage swelling, particularly around the hairline if that was the area being corrected.
  • Hold off washing for the first 48 hours. After that your doctor will walk you through exactly how to clean the area safely without disturbing newly placed grafts.
  • Avoid direct sun on the scalp for at least two weeks. Healing tissue, especially previously worked scalp, is more sensitive to UV than normal skin.
  • Skip the gym, swimming, and anything strenuous for 10–14 days minimum. Sweating over a healing repair site increases irritation and infection risk.
  • The shedding phase between weeks 2–8 applies here too. Given the complexity of repair cases, some patients find the wait for visible growth feels longer than normal and the timeline varies individually.

Few Of The Common Concerns

Physical discomfort affects daily life and overall wellbeing. At our physiotherapy center, we help you overcome pain, improve mobility, and restore body function through professional care and guidance.

Almost always, yes. Extreme donor depletion or severe scalp scarring are the rare exceptions where options become limited. In most cases, there's at least one corrective path available, sometimes more than one.

Usually it comes down to poor preoperative evaluation, inadequate graft storage between extraction and implantation, incorrect implantation angle, or mishandling of fragile follicular units. Every one of those failures is avoidable with the right surgical team.

Yes. When prior over-harvesting has depleted the scalp donor zone, grafts from the beard, chest, arms, or legs can supplement the repair effectively.

No. It's performed under local anaesthesia just like a standard transplant. The complexity is entirely on the surgeon's side, not the patient's.

The timeline is the same as any transplant. Initial shedding happens first, followed by new growth from around 4–6 months. Full results are typically visible by 12 months.
