Proper anesthetizing of the scalp- Local anesthesia is used to numb the donor and recipient areas of the scalp, one by one.
Removal of a hair-bearing strip from the donor site and its closure- After the donor area feels numb, the surgeon cuts the back of the patient’s head to take out a hair-bearing skin strip of width 0.5 to 1.5 cm and length 5 to 30 cm. The incision wound is later closed using a suture in such a way that it is minimally detectable and remains hidden in between hair.
Preparation of recipient site- The surgeon makes small slits in the bald area of the scalp.
Harvesting of hair follicular units- The surgeon hands the removed strip to a dissecting team who under a microscope extracts the individual hair follicular units which are further used as grafts.
